About

Join Annabelle Gurwitch Author, the New York Times–bestselling author of the essay collection Wherever You Go, There They Are: Stories About My Family You Might Relate To, and Jade Chang, author of the award-winning novel The Wangs vs. the World, as they illuminate the connections between their immigrant stories.

At the center of each work is a larger-than-life father with an unorthodox approach to the American Dream. Gurwitch's entrepreneurial father learned everything he knew from his ancestors who escaped the Russian pogroms, settled in the deep South, and then became the bootlegging, brothel-owning chapter of the Shalom Y'all tribe. In Chang's book, Charles Wang has lost an American-made makeup fortune and longs to return to China and reclaim the ancestral land stolen by the Communists.

This provocative conversation will consider the lasting effects of World War II, the challenges of writing, and the delicious, maddening entanglements of family.
