SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Bird Count Headquarters (10:00am – 4:00pm)
Kick off the Great Backyard Bird Count in the VINS classroom! Head there to pick up your “Citizen Scientist Data Sheet”, and fill it with your wild bird findings. Whether observing in the field or in our classroom, add your data to the day’s list and check out what other visitors have seen.

Coloring and Word Searches (10:00am - 4:00pm)
Take a moment to appreciate the vibrant colors of nature by making your own work of art. Pick up a coloring page or a word search and warm your toes before your next journey outdoors.

Bird ID and Binoculars Workshop (10:30am - 11:00am)
Learn to identify those feathered visitors to your backyard, and practice with some of the tools that will help you become a real birder. Meet in the classroom, then we’ll head outside to put your new skills to good use.

Guided Bird Walk with a VINS Naturalist (1:00pm - 1:30pm)
Let us show you around the forested trails of VINS Nature Center. We’ll be counting birds, and on the lookout for a few of our wild residents—a female Great Horned Owl who has nested nearby, or a family of otters in the river. Bring snowshoes or borrow some of ours.

Meet a Raptor: Intro to the Great Backyard Bird Count (11:00am – 11:45am)
What is the Great Backyard Bird Count all about and why is it so special? Is that a real live falcon? Have all your burning questions answered in this introduction to the largest bird survey ever conducted, and the part you can play in it!

Year of the Bird: Build a Nest Box (1:00pm – 3:30pm)
Come build a nest box with us and take home a safe place for songbirds to raise their families this spring. A VINS carpenter will be available to help you out. Cost is $10 for materials, please sign up at the Nature Store.

Raptor Enclosure Tour (1:30pm - 2:00pm)
Join a raptor expert on this guided walk through our enclosures. Learn all kinds of insider information from design and upkeep to the natural history of our resident raptors.

Predators of the Sky (2:00pm – 2:45pm)
Come inside to warm up from a hard day’s bird-watching to meet our avian ambassadors as they fly right by and a VINS educator explains their amazing adaptations.

Raptor Feeding Time (2:45pm)
Ever wonder what we feed the raptors here at VINS? Or how we keep our residents healthy and happy? Join us to observe the eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls eating their daily meal and discover what it takes to care for these wonderful creatures.
