Moira Smiley returns to Methow Valley with Jayme Stone’s Folklife
Two-time Juno-winning banjoist and composer Jayme Stone makes music inspired from around the world, bridging folk, jazz, and chamber music. His award-winning albums both defy and honor the banjo’s long role in the world’s music, turning historical connections into compelling sounds. On his Folklife tour, Stone collaborates with Methow Valley favorite Moira Smiley as well as Sumaia Jackson and Joe Phillips.
"A truly inventive spin on some very old tunes."
~ GEORGIA STRAIGHT
Those who saw Moira Smiley perform with VOCO in the Methow Valley in 2011 will likely not miss the chance to see her again at the Winthrop Barn in November 2017 as part of Jayme Stone’s Folklife quartet. Stemming from Stone’s Lomax Project—which celebrates songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax—Folklife treats old field recordings not as time capsules but as heirloom seeds passed down from a bygone generation. Planting these sturdy seeds in modern soil, this versatile gathering of musicians has cultivated vibrant Sea Island spirituals, Creole calypsos, and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes for contemporary listeners.
Folklife follows the bends and bayous through the deep river of song and story. This gathering of versatile musicians blows the dust off old songs and remakes them for modern ears. With spellbinding singing, virtuosic playing and captivating storytelling, their concerts and educational programs are moving, inventive and participatory experiences.
"An album of beautiful, intriguing, thoughtful music coming from a collaboration of outstanding musicians who apply their talents together. It rewards our attention as much as it captures it, leading us to the music, rather than pushing us to it." ~ SING OUT!
Jayme Stone’s Folklife will be performing for students in Okanogan County schools the week of November 6th, through Methow Arts Alliance’s regional arts education programs. The quartet will cap its week with a public performance at the Winthrop Barn on Sat, Nov 11 at 7pm.
