About

The Humanist Hub invites parents and families to attend this special 'secular Sunday school' and inspirational speaker series! Monthly from 10:30 am to noon September-December, we will host Big Question Lab classes for kids ages 7-11, with childcare will be available for children under 7, while parents (and anyone interested!) can join us to hear inspiring talks from some of our favorite experts on parenting and family life in the 21st century.

On Sunday, September 17, join us for a conversation with Katherine Ozment:

For too long, we’ve raised our children to follow either a generic herd mentality or pursue an individualistic quest for personal happiness—both of which lead to lives of complacency, detachment, and meaninglessness. Incidences of depression and anxiety in kids are skyrocketing, even as parents drive themselves crazy with worried over-parenting. Today’s political climate is the ultimate teachable moment for parents. Ozment’s talk will demonstrate how parents can shift the focus away from our children’s happiness and achievement and toward a greater sense of personal responsibility, civic engagement, and community service--all of which bring meaning and purpose to our--and most importantly, our children's--lives.

Katherine Ozment is the author of Grace Without God: The Search for Meaning, Purpose, and Belonging in a Secular Age. She is an award-winning journalist who has worked in publishing for more than twenty-five years, including as a senior editor at National Geographic magazine. Grace Without God was named a “Best Book of 2016” by Publishers Weekly and Spirituality & Health, received the Gold Nautilus Award in the category of Religion/Spirituality of Other Traditions, and was recently awarded the first-place prize in the Religion News Association’s annual competition for Excellence in Nonfiction Religion Books. She lives in Chicago with her husband and three children.

The Humanist Hub's E.O. Wilson Big Question Lab provides children and adolescents with an inclusive space to learn in a secular setting about what it means to be a moral citizen. Our goal is to create a safe environment for youth to explore their identities as critical thinkers and as compassionate, community-minded participants in our diverse world. Our curricular framework was designed by scholars at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The Humanist Hub is an inclusive community of atheists, agnostics and allies creating a new model for how humanists celebrate life, promote reason and compassion, and better the world for all. We were founded 40 years ago as the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard-- the first chaplaincy for humanists, atheists and agnostics at any university in North America. We recieve no funding or financial support from Harvard and our activities are now completely open to the general public.
