About the program:
Goyfriend: Jews and Their Neighbors Through the Eyes of Each Other.
Goyfriend (druGoy / ДруГой) is a new program presented by one of the most sought after voices in klezmer music, Berlin based Sasha Lurje and critically acclaimed Litvakus, a band known for its raw, rootsy and energetic performance of Jewish music from Belarus (New York City). The brainchild of the Latvian native, Sasha Lurje and the Belarusian Zisl Slepovitch - Litvakus’ bandleader and an accomplished composer, clarinetist and ethnomusicologist, Goyfriend offers a fresh and revealing view on the Jewish-Slavic-Baltic cultural dialog through music. The fascinating and diverse program explores this crossroads of cultures, with over 600 years of common history. The sound of Goyfriend is earthy, rich in drones and harmonics, bass and drum that all complement one another in their forward-moving energy. The languages of Goyfriend are Belarusian, Polish, Ukrainian, Latvian, and Lithuanian, but then it’s also Yiddish that over centuries got absorbed and adapted into all Baltic and Slavic languages.
