About

How to Fail First, Fail Hard, and Fail Fast - with Reshma Saujani
Founder and CEO, Girls Who Code

Reshma Saujani sparked a national conversation on the importance of increasing the number of women and girls in tech, convening academics, foundations, tech CEOs, and community organizers to design and successfully launch Girls Who Code. As former deputy public advocate of New York City and executive director of the Fund for Public Advocacy, Reshma brought together public and private sectors to encourage entrepreneurship and civic engagement across NYC, galvanizing industry leaders to close the gender gap in STEM education, and empower girls to pursue careers in technology and engineering. She is the author of Women Who Don’t Wait in Line: Break the Mold, Lead the Way (2013). Reshma is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Yale Law School. She’s been listed in Fortune’s 40 Under 40, Forbes’ Most Powerful Women Changing the World, Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People, and Business Insider’s 50 Women Who Are Changing the World.

Reshma Saujani is a serial failed politician. Strikingly, it is because of her failures she has built a national movement that is changing the conversation about women and technology.

Reshma is the Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national non-profit organization working to close the gender gap in technology. In 2010, she surged onto the political scene as the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. During the race she visited local schools and saw the gender gap in computing classes firsthand, which inspired her to start Girls Who Code in 2012. The organization has grown to reach 40,000 girls, running 80 Summer Immersion Programs and 1,500 Clubs across the US.

Reshma advocates for a new model of female leadership focused on risk-taking, competition, and mentorship. “Success is the product of bravery, not perfection,” she says. “Fail first, fail hard, and fail fast.”

Recounting her personal narrative and lessons learned in this compelling, dynamic and earnest presentation, Saujani also weaves in stories of other accomplished women who have overcome roadblocks and forged new paths—women who have similarly learned to live an authentic life by taking risks and choosing to seek failure rather than fear it.
