About

About:
Dan Zanes

Grammy Award winner Dan Zanes occupies a unique place in American music where sea shanties, English music hall, North American and West Indian folk music, play party songs, the spirit of early rock-and-roll and soulful originals collide. Beginning in the year 2000 he has performed everywhere from thrift shop basements to Carnegie Hall, from Brooklyn to Bahrain and beyond, and during that time has released over a dozen children’s CDs and several DVDs reconnecting people to songs that have always been there, and still are—although people may have forgotten about them.

Referred to as “the family-music genre’s most outspoken and eloquent advocate” by Time Magazine, his widely - acclaimed music has all been featured on Sesame Street, Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon, HBO Family and Sprout.

Dan is currently finishing up a CD that celebrates the children’s music of his main inspiration, Lead Belly, The King of the 12-String Guitar. “Ha-Ha This Away” will be released on the Smithsonian/Folkways label in spring 2017.

For the past year, Zanes has been a strong advocate for Sensory Friendly performances and is working with Haitian-American jazz vocalist / Music Therapist Claudia Eliaza to find new ways to reach and include communities with children who have special needs.

This year he joined the ranks of some of America’s premier roots musicians as a guitar and ukulele teacher with Sonic Junction, the leader in online interactive instructional Americana video lessons.

Claudia Eliaza

Claudia Eliaza is an internationally acclaimed Haitian-American songstress. Her unique voice and style have taken her from Carnegie Hall to The Jazz Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, a country she has toured several times. Claudia’s vocal gifts have also taken her to Kenya, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and England. Along the way she has collaborated with legends such as Nancy King, Barbara Morrison, and Keith Lockhart. As if this weren’t enough, Claudia is a Board Certified Music Therapist and directs the Music Therapy program at the Community Music Center of Boston. In 2016 she began collaborating with Dan Zanes on a series of Sensory Friendly all-ages programs that the two plan to continue indefinitely.

Pauline Jean

Haitian-American performing artist and humanitarian, PAULINE JEAN, is a captivating vocalist whose distinctive contralto and rousing melodies have caught the attention of audiences both young and old. Jean brings a refreshing sound to today's music; creating an erudite blend of worldly jazz that draws from her Creole roots and integrates modern and traditional inflections. She has received considerable press globally from leading media publications such as DownBeat, Jazzwise, All About Jazz, World Music Report, and many more.

Jean has been featured as a performer and bandleader at numerous prestigious festivals around the globe and has appeared in Barbados, The Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Haiti, Israel, Lebanon, Nevis Island, Russia, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the US Virgin Islands. She has also collaborated with esteemed literary artist, Edwidge Danticat, and distinguished performers Denis Matsuev, Emeline Michel, and Wyclef Jean, among others. Her latest CD, NWAYO, was praised as "an amalgam of pure jazz vocalization steeped in Caribbean rhythm and soul" by AllAboutJazz.com and "extraordinary musicianship" by the World Music Report. Jean is featured on Grammy- winning artist Dan Zanes' tribute album to blues icon Lead Belly on Smithsonian Folkways.

Jean shares her perspectives on music and life as a musician through teaching private students and workshops for singers on all levels in the US and abroad. She travels to Haiti annually with a group of musicians, as part of the Experience Ayiti mission, to provide aid, master classes, free concerts, and instrument distribution throughout different regions of the island. Jean is a graduate from Berklee College of Music and an Artist-In-Residence with the Conservatory Lab Charter School's, El Sistema music program in Boston.
