Sunday Afternoons at the EAC presents Diana Young
When?Start time: Sunday 3:00pm (14 January)
End time: Sunday 4:00pm (14 January)
The Eastport Arts Center will be offering its popular Sunday Afternoons at the EAC series again this year, with weekly sessions running from mid-January through April. The series kicks off at 3 pm on January 14 with an art talk by Diana Young titled “Eastport Paintings, 1990-2017.” Young will discuss an array of works done in Eastport, and also show new work inspired by a recent 80th birthday river cruise of the Rhine, Danube and the Bosphorus. “I filled three sketchbooks and the excitement generated by the trip propelled me into painting a series of large horizontal paintings,” said Young. “I plan to bring these along with the sketches to show you my present state of mind as well as the Eastport images of my past.”
Encouraged throughout her childhood by very supportive parents, Young spent a good deal of time painting and sketching and had begun to developers her own style in elementary school. She had the opportunity to study with some very talented teachers as well as traveling all over France with her mother as they sketched together. A member of the Bangor Art Society, Young asserts that she is still learning from her friends, many of whom she paints with weekly in Bangor and who visit her in Eastport to paint Downeast.
Subsequent presentations in the series are as follows: January 21: Kris Paprocki, “I Hear Washington County Singing” a presentation of historical and traditional music of Downeast Maine; January 28, Chris Bartlett on winter sea birds of Passamaquoddy Bay; February 4, Jon Bragdon on the influence of photography on painters’ work; February 11, Valerie Lawson and friends reading from 3 Nations Anthology: Native, Canadian & New England Writers; February 18, Gregory Biss’ annual harpsichord hour; February 25, Jon Calame on “Heirs to the Ethnic Ghetto System: Italy’s Roma Minority”; March 4, Shead High School Music Program with jazz and rock music and a discussion; March 11, Stage East staged reading; March 18 art talk by Richard Van Buren and Anna Hepler; March 25, David Greenham on “The Immigrant Experience in Maine”; April 8, workshop performance of the opera Brundibar by EAC Children’s Theater Workshop and PBSO members; April 15 program TBA; April 22, Mark DeVoto with an illustrated talk on Beethoven’s Fidelio. April 29 is reserved as a snow date for any program that needs to be resecheduled.
An offshoot of the center’s summer Concert Series, the Sunday series began in 2009 and has been going strong with diverse programs offered in a casual and cozy atmosphere downstairs at the EAC. The programs are free and open to the public, and take place each Sunday (except Easter Sunday) at 3 pm. Hot drinks and refreshments are offered; donations are accepted. For more information, please visit www.eastportartscenter.org or call (207) 853-4650. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is handicapped-accessible.
